I would also like to thank the many friends, colleagues, co-panelists, and audience members at recent meetings of the American Academy of Religion, the Association for Asian Studies, and the International Association for Buddhist Studies whose questions, challenges, and suggestions have made this a stronger project.

Thank you to the funders, organizers, and participants at UC Berkeley’s Mongolia Initiative conferences, the Buddhist Studies Program Fund of UC Santa Barbara’s Department of Religious Studies & the XIVth Dalai Lama Endowment, the Yale MacMillan Center’s InterAsia Initiative, Eötvös Loránd University’s Mongolian Buddhism Workshop Series in Budapest, the Oriental Studies Conference at the University of Warsaw, the Käte Hamburger Kolleg Dynamics in the History of Religions Between Asia and Europe in Bochum, and the Oriental Studies Colloquium at Oxford University. Delivered across conference rooms, beer halls, train cars, and dinner Īcknowledgments tables, the insights of colleagues at these events have been invaluable in the final stretches of this writing. I have been fortunate to work out some of the ideas explored in this book at several meetings, workshops, and invited talks in the last two or three years. I am particularly grateful for the insights and generosity of our senior faculty mentors, especially Prasenjit Duara and Engseng Ho. The feedback, critique, and conversation that occurred at those events on this project (and the next!) was rich and challenging and is widely represented in many of these pages. In addition to supporting leave from teaching and other responsibilities to write and research abroad, the SSRC convened fellows for extended interdisciplinary workshops on our projects at Duke University, in Chiang Mai, and in Phnom Penh. Many of the ideas in this book were solidified while I was participating in the 2016–17 SSRC Transregional Research Junior Scholar Fellowship program. I am especially grateful to the Social Science Research Council for their generous support. I would like to acknowledge the generosity of the American Council of Learned Societies, the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Association for Asian Studies, the Khyentse Foundation, the Sheng-Yen Lu Foundation, the UC Riverside Regent’s Faculty Fellowship, UC Riverside’s Center for Ideas and Society, and the Mellon Advancing Intercultural Studies Workshop series at CIS. The completion of the research and writing for this book was made possible through the financial assistance of several programs and institutions.
